personal reflection : week 11

This week class talk about " Technology & How it is changing our media & culture". Mdm. Helena said that this is the simplest topic in this class. I am very agree with what she said. I can understand this topic easily. We had also submitted the assignment 2. This assignment was very difficult for me. I spend alot of time in this assignment for doing some research.

critical thinking : week 11

thinking 1 :

The cultural that I can see in today’s world is internet. Internet is very important in today’s world. It is a global network of interconnected computers, enabling users to share information along multiple channels. Internet is a high-speed computer network. We can get many information from internet. We can also communicate with each other through internet. There are many benefit in using internet just as I mention just now, but there’re some disadvantages too. Internet is a shattered faith in institutions and in the explanatory narratives that formerly gave shape to subjective experience. It is also a divorce from the past, from a vital sense of history as a cumulative or organic process and an estrangement from geographic place and community.

Thinking 2 :

In my opinion, I think there’s a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology. The method we can use to reshape culture is e-banking. E-banking includes the systems that enable financial institution customers, individuals or businesses, to access accounts, transact business, or obtain information on financial products and services through a public or private network, including the Internet. So, e-banking is a facility for people to do the financial activities with bank.

The advantage of e-banking is “Time Out Feature”. Once we have logged into the e-Banking, a session can last as long as 10 minutes. This feature is for customers’ safety and protection. This feature will allow only a short period of time to elapse for an unwanted person to access customers’ account information.

Besides that, it can also bring many convenient for people especially buissnessman. They do not have to leave their house to pay their bills. They can easily pay their bills through e-banking by using internet. People will be able to access e-Banking services anytime and anywhere to conduct their banking transactions. So, people will enjoy express and high-quality banking services via Internet to conduct transaction.

personal reflection week 10

Due to another assignment was rushing, I absent for Media Culture class this Monday. I didn't know what the lecturer teaching. But due to the slide that upload by lecturer this week was about "Media Imperialism". Its a very difficult topic, I still not very understand about this topic. But I will try to understand it more clearly.

personal reflection

critical thinking week 10

The documentary entitled "The Power of Nightmares (Part 3 - Shadow in the Cave)" by Adam Curtis was shown in class on Monday. How do you relate the information given to you in the documentary to the theory of Media Imperialism that we talked about in lecture?

Critical thinking 1

As we all know, Media Imperialism is the idea that powerful and wealthy countries can exercise economic, cultural and social control over others through control of media industries. It also can be definate as a theory stating that smaller countries are losing their identity due to the force-feeding of media from larger nations. Media imperialism is not just seen internationally. When large amounts of media output are produced by just a few, or even one company, then this too is media imperialism. In the past, politicians promised to create a better world. They had different ways of achieving this. But their power and authority came from the optimistic visions they offered to their people. Those dreams failed. And today, people have lost faith in ideologies.

The video of "The Power of Nightmares (Part 3 - Shadow in the Cave)" is about the story of two groups: the American neoconservatives and the radical Islamists. The wars between this two groups had killed a lot of people. For example, two huge suicide bombs were detonated outside American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, killing more than 200 people. This showed how Media Imperialism affect societies so much.

Critical thinking 2

Media imperialism coverage of the larger nations has been criticized as having blanket coverage of the world's events. Its content may be affected by the ability to control the content and amount of media coverage on a particular issue. "The Power of Nightmares" video clearly demonstrates that the nightmare vision of a powerful, united terrorist organization waiting to strike our societies is largely an illusion.

For example , In January, 2001, a trial began in a Manhattan courtroom of four men accused of the embassy bombings in east Africa. But the Americans had also decided to prosecute bin Laden in his absence. But to do this under American law, the prosecutors needed evidence of a criminal organisation because, as with the Mafia, that would allow them to prosecute the head of the organisation even if he could not be linked directly to the crime. This showed the effect of media imperialism too.

Personal thinking - week 9

On this Monday Media Culture class, the lecturer said that our assignment 2 that was the topic that had given last week needs to add the source where we found and some theory given by Mc Luhan.

Besides that, the slides that lecturer gave us was 'The Extensions of Man'.
All about the concept that said by Mc Luhan.
through this slides, i can know more about media concept. For example, McLuhan's concept of "media", Examples of Media and their Message, and "Hot" media and "Cool" media. Thats all we learnt this week.

week 9 - critical thinking

Critical thinking 1:

According to the notes that given by lecturer :

The tetrad is a means of examining the effects on society of any technology/medium and
explaining the social processes underlying the adoption of a technology/medium by dividing its effects into four categories.

I would like to choose internet and explain its media effect.
McLuhan designed the tetrad as a pedagogical tool, phrasing his laws as questions with which to consider any medium, the question are below:

1. What does the medium enhance?
Discuss about internet, in my opinion, the enhance of internet will be communication to others , spreads news and find information via the words, pictures, and also videos.

2.What does the medium make obsolete?
In my opinion, internet makes chatting face to face obsolete. With internet, people will less chatting face to face, they think chatting through internet like MSN is more convenience.

3.What does the medium retrieve that had been obsolesced earlier?

In my opinion, the lack of information in the past and the internet had covered it. The internet now can found information through google, yahoo and many many more. It can also communicate by Window Live Messenger, facebook and others. It had covered the earlier internet that can only found the limited information

4.What does the medium flip into when pushed to extremes?
In my opinion, when the internet pushed to extremes, culture engenders a need for solitude.

Critical thinking 2 :

The second medium that i would like to discuss is radio
1. What does the medium enhance?
In my opinion, radio spreads the news, promote music and also advertisement via sound.

2.What does the medium make obsolete?
In my opinion , radio makes the importance of print and the visual obsolete. People would like to get the latest news by liste to radio and neglected print and the visual such as newspaper and megazines.

3.What does the medium retrieve that had been obsolesced earlier?
In my opinion, Radio returns the spoken word to the forefront.

4.What does the medium flip into when pushed to extremes?
In my opinion, acoustic radio will flip to audio-visual TV when radio os pushed to extremes.

personal refection- week 8

This Monday 's Media culture class start at 9.30am because the late of lecturer.Once he came in, he brought a bad news and a good news. The bad news was assignment 2 will start on this week and had to submit on next Monday with soft copy and hard copy. The good news was we just only have to write 800 words on that topic. For me, there ware two bad news and doesn't have any good news.

The topic was "Role of Media in Socializing; Discuss the human needs that the Media help satisfy in term of the News and Entertainment." If we do better in this topic, then we no need to do another passage. But if average we do bad in this topic, the lecturer will give us another passage to do. Wish me good luck!!!

critical thinking 1 & 2- week 8

According to my research, the meaning of :

1. Obscenity - (in Latin obscenus, meaning "foul, repulsive, detestable"), is a term that is most often used in a legal context to describe expressions (words, images, actions) that offend the prevalent sexual morality of the time. It is often replaced by the word salaciousness.

source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obscenity

2. Pornography - is the explicit depiction of sexual subject matter with the sole intention of sexually exciting the viewer. It is to a certain extent similar to erotica, which is the use of sexually arousing imagery.

source : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornography

3. indecency - offensive to good taste especially in sexual matters; "an earthy but not indecent story"; "an indecent gesture"
dirty - (of behavior or especially language) characterized by obscenity or indecency; "dirty words"; "a dirty old man"; "dirty books and movies"; "boys telling dirty jokes"; "has a dirty mouth"

source : http://www.thefreedictionary.com/indecent

After i learned about these three words- that are obscenity, pornography and indecency. There are some diferences between them. In my poinion, the differentiation between indecent and obsence material is a particularly difficult one, and a contentious First Amendment issue that has not fully been settled.

Beside these, i felt that pornography more on video or photo that show by actor or actress; but obsence more on some disgusting words and will make people uncomfortable after listened. These all culture are cause by moral educating and social culture these years.
